Is Volunteering at Community Gardens Worth It for Retirees?

Many retirees are seeking meaningful ways to connect with their community and stay active during their free time. With the growth of community gardens in Portland, volunteering in these spaces seems like a great option. Still, it can be hard to determine if the time investment pays off.

From what I’ve heard, the work can be physically demanding, but the opportunity to meet new people and contribute to something positive is a strong draw. Some volunteers emphasize the social aspect as one of the biggest benefits, making it feel less like work and more like a community gathering. However, others are concerned about the time commitment and whether it fits with their other interests.

Have you participated in any community garden projects? What was your experience like, and do you think the effort is worthwhile? I’d love to hear your opinions!

I’ve volunteered at a community garden for a couple of years now, and honestly, it’s been great for meeting folks. The work can be tough, but it’s not just about the gardening—I’ve made some really good friends there. Plus, there’s something satisfying about seeing the fruits of your labor, literally! If you enjoy being outdoors and socializing, I’d say go for it!

I helped out at a community garden last summer, and honestly, it was a blast! Met a ton of cool people and learned a lot about gardening, but some days it felt like too much work for just a couple of veggies. Have you tried any specific projects there?
