What's the best way to choose plants for a Toronto garden?

As gardening season gets underway in Toronto, I’m thinking about how to select the right plants for my garden. Every year, I find the sheer number of options a bit overwhelming. It seems like some plants flourish here while others struggle to survive. Last summer, I tried a few new flowers and herbs, but not all of them made it, which was disappointing.

The unpredictable weather is a challenge, and I want to create a vibrant garden that also helps support local pollinators. I’ve read that native plants are a good choice, but I’m not sure where to begin. What do you consider when choosing plants for your garden? Are there specific varieties that you recommend for the Toronto area?

I’d love to hear your experiences and any tips you have for making the right plant choices!

I hear you about the overwhelming choices! Native plants are definitely a solid pick, but I’ve found some herbs struggle in the heat if they’re not in the right spot. I’d suggest starting with something like coneflowers or milkweed; they’ve done great for me and bring in the pollinators too. Just make sure to check the specific light and soil needs!
